A Carleton University student living in residence has tested positive for COVID-19, the first case to be confirmed on campus this school year.

The student is self-isolating, according to a statement from the university.

According to an email sent out by Housing and Residence Life Services on Sept. 12, Ottawa Public Health is completing contact tracing and will contact any individual who may be at risk.

“Now more than ever, it is important that each of us respects the guidelines for safe social gatherings in and out of residence,” the email, sent out to all residence students, reads. “We have an individual and collective responsibility to keep our community safe.”

The university has put in place guidelines to help limit the spread of COVID-19 in residence. Students are not allowed to move between floors for at least the first two weeks, and are only allowed one socially-distanced guest in their room at a time. Parties are also prohibited.

Housing and Residence Life Services is encouraging students in residence to self-assess daily and to contact the Residence Manager if they experience symptoms or feel unwell.

“Isolated COVID-19 instances were to be expected in the current context,” the statement reads.

Carleton’s first confirmed case on campus comes after a University of Ottawa student living in residence tested positive for COVID-19 last week.

Additional measures taken by Carleton include limiting double and suite rooms on campus to just one student and increased cleaning, according to Carleton’s COVID-19 FAQ page.

Carleton is also encouraging off-campus students to avoid coming to campus.
