University Drive at Carleton was closed after a garbage truck caught fire Monday morning.
Fire workers arrived on scene near the Athletics Fieldhouse around 11 a.m.
They were seen hosing down the truck with water as putrid smoke escaped—the black fumes visible above the campus skyline.University Drive was reopened later in the day after fire workers cleaned up the scene.
“I would say it was on fire or smoking for over an hour,” said Steven Reid, Carleton’s media relations officer.
Reid said the driver of the truck was inside when the engine caught fire, but he remains unharmed.
“They’re thinking the fire was started by some hydraulic malfunctioning,” Reid added.
Campus Safety workers were seen at the intersection of Campus Avenue, directing traffic away from University Drive.
The garbage truck fire is now out and cleanup efforts are underway.
At this time, only northbound traffic is allowed on University Drive from Day Care Road to Parking Lot 7.— Carleton University (@Carleton_U) September 16, 2019
