The Ravens men’s hockey team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Queen’s University Gaels in game one of the Queen’s Cup East Final series on Feb. 28.
“It looks like that winning goal was kicked in, but they don’t call it. They don’t see it that way—it’s a guess, in my opinion,” Ravens head coach Shaun Van Allen said on the overtime game winner.
“They’re confident in their decision, we’re confident they kicked it in, and what you got to do is you got to win two games,” Van Allen added.
The first goal of the game came with three minutes remaining in the opening frame when Gaels forward Jaden Lindo deflected a shot off Ravens netminder Francois Brassard into the net.
With the Gaels up 1-0, the teams left the ice with Carleton having eight more shots on goal than Queen’s.
“We had to pick it up,” Ravens forward Alex Boivin said on being down 1-0.
“I think we had a slow start, that was pretty evident to everybody, and in the third we really had to get our legs going, get our forecheck going, and really pick up the pace . . . we were playing the game that they wanted us to play, and we weren’t dictating the pace like we normally do.”
The second period was scoreless as Queen’s left the ice with nine shots on goal compared to the Ravens’ eight.
Seconds into the third period, the Ravens made it a tie game when forward Dalen Hedges popped the puck just off of Queen’s goaltender Justin Fazio’s glove side.
Six minutes later, the Gaels retook the lead when forward Duncan Campbell sent the puck flying past Brassard and into the net.
With 20 seconds remaining in the third, the Ravens made it a tie game once again when forward Matthew Forchuk sent the puck five-hole through Fazio’s pads.
For the second game in a row, the Ravens headed to sudden death overtime. This time, though, the Ravens would end up dropping the game, as Lindo potted his second of the night to give his team a 1-0 lead in the series.
“It’s a good feeling. It’s a short series, you only need two wins, so it’s nice to get the first one, be ahead, and put them back on their toes, and going back into our own building on a Friday night in Kingston is going to be a lot of fun,” Gaels forward Liam Dunda said. “And it’s always nice when you give yourself the upper hand going into a short series like this.”
The Ravens now look ahead to face off against Queen’s again tonight.
“I don’t think anything changes. Obviously, we had the similar scenario with McGill, but there’s no secret that we need to be better, I think everybody’s got to step up their game, because, it’s do or die, so, two more game and that’s it. So, we got to really put the pressure on here, and get to working,” Boivin said.
