CFS petition lost in transit

A petition with approximately 2,300 signatures asking to hold a referendum on Carleton undergraduates’ membership in their national student union appears to have been lost in transit.

The petition, which began circulating campus Sept. 14, must be approved by the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) in order for a referendum to be held in March.

Fourth-year journalism student and petition founder Dean Tester said a bailiff hired by petitioners slipped the package through the mail slot of the Toronto office of CFS Ontario Sept. 29.

However, the Ontario branch of the CFS said it has not received the package.

“We have not received any petition,” said Shelley Melanson, the chairperson of CFS Ontario.

Tester said he also sent an electronic copy to Melanson’s personal e-mail, and expressed disbelief that the organization had not received it.

The petitioners are continuing to collect signatures for a second petition that will be sent to the national branch of the CFS.

Backpack thieves in caf

Students are being advised to be on their guard following a rash of backpack thefts from the cubbyholes in the residence cafeteria.

“Be aware. People are stealing,” said Len Boudreault, director of the department of university safety.

The department advises students to keep valuables in their room or on their person when they enter the cafeteria. Locks can also be used on the cubbyholes to protect belongings.

The department is reviewing security camera footage to identify thieves.

New CASG reps and newsletter in the works

The results are in for the Carleton Academic Student Government (CASG) elections, with 82 representatives from a variety of departments elected or acclaimed.

The CASG executive was elected in spring 2009. There will be a by-election for the vice-president (finance) in November.

Voter turnout for the election, which was held online, was approximately 10 per cent.
This year, CASG plans to launch the Carleton Chronicle, an on-line newsletter relating to academics and student life, according to vice-president (operations) Matthew Dick.

Current Carleton University Students’ Association president Erik Halliwell and vice-president (finance) Meera Chander were elected as representatives for the department of Law.
