Name: Taylor Eby
Program/Year: Human rights, second year
Position running for: Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) councillor
1. Why are you running for CUSA council?
Like many students this year, I was quite frustrated with our council’s lack of progress and frivolous lawsuit. Instead of just complaining about the situation, I decided I wanted to make a difference in CUSA. We all share the responsibility to shape our students’ association and not allow it to be controlled by those interested in petty personal politics.
2. What do you think makes you a good candidate?
I’m good-humoured and down to earth, willing to work with all students. I have been involved with numerous social justice groups including Carleton’s own human rights society and Students Against Israeli Apartheid. I am committed to seeking positive, progressive social change whether on campus or in the global community.
3. What are two things you hope to achieve if elected?
One: I will continue to work with the numerous student groups who are pressuring this administration to divest from various unethical corporations. Students have a right to demand that our money is invested responsibly.
Two: To combat currently pervasive attitudes of discrimination on campus, I will work with other councillors to implement mandatory anti-oppression training for all of council and help create similar workshops for all students.
4. What’s one fun fact about yourself?
I once managed to hitchhike from southern Ontario to the East Coast with two friends of mine. Along the way we worked on a tree farm, went to the original Alexander Keith’s brewery in Halifax and ended up in a sailboat race in the Charlottetown harbour where our team took first place. It was a pretty incredible adventure and if I was not in school I would probably be doing something similar again.
