The Ravens varsity women’s field hockey team was unable to claim their first season victory last weekend as they played host to 11 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) field hockey matches at Keith Harris Stadium.
The girls competed in four of the 11 matches during the weekend, losing their final match to the York University Lions on Sept. 20.
The mild temperature and unquestionable spirit from Ravens fans created the perfect atmosphere for the final game of the weekend, but the girls were unable to capitalize on home turf.
The Ravens played a solid first half with strong defence, but the Lions were able to seize an opportunity in the closing minutes of the half to take a 1-0 lead going into intermission.
Ravens’ spirit still looked promising at the start of the second half, but the Lions’ lead was soon pushed to 2-0 within the first minute of resumed play.
Despite the ladies deepest efforts, York continued to find the back of the net and finished the game with a 4-0 victory.
“We have a young team and I think we need to improve every game,” said Ravens veteran Courtney Watson. “I just try to switch the field. All I can really do is lead by example and hope for the best.”
Morgan McGregor, a rookie to the team, said, “being one of the youngest players on the team I know all I can do is give my best and try to help the team and the vets to reach their goals.”
Despite the four-game defeat last weekend, the team remains positive.
“It’s hard when we have such a young team, but I know the potential is there,” said head coach Michelle McEvoy. “The team had its moments of brilliance and right now we’re just focused on doing our best and remaining consistent.”
