California-Berkley grad student James Karl Buck tweeted his way out of an Egyptian jail in April 2008. Arrested while covering an anti-government protest in Mahalla, Buck texted: “Arrested” to his Twitter account and within seconds his colleagues back home became aware of his situation and worked on getting him out of jail.

India resident Deepak Sharma is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records for sending the most text messages in one month – 182,689 – which works out to be about 6,100 messages a day, 253 an hour, 4.2 a minute, or a new one every 14 seconds.

On Aug. 22, 2009 the Mobile Phone Throwing World Championship took place in the Punkaharju, Savonlinna region. The competition’s website advocates that mobile phone throwing is a light and modern Finnish sport suited for people of all ages. The Finns celebrated victories in both the male and female category – the furthest throw being 7,960 metres.
