For the first time Carleton University Students’ Association’s (CUSA) frosh week will be bottled-water free.
Reusable water bottles will be provided in frosh kits and handed out to frosh facilitators, according to Alex Sirois, CUSA vice-president (student life). Water refill stations will be available for frosh and tents will be put out for shade.
In light of the hot weather during orientation week in previous years, one of frosh’s head facilitators, Kate Lalumiere, looks forward to CUSA’s environmentally-friendly approach to providing water this year.
“The past few years, many of the outdoor events such as canal games and beach day have taken place on days that reached 30 degrees,” Lalumiere said, adding that the sustainable water bottles are a great idea.
“Not only will it promote a green Carleton, but it will also ensure that new students can easily keep themselves hydrated throughout the week," Lalumiere said.
CUSA’s initiative to accommodate and promote reusable water bottles during frosh week is well received by third-year Carleton student Gavin McKercher.
“I think plastic bottles are really wasteful, and I’m glad to hear we’re getting rid of them,” McKercher said. “We’ve got water fountains everywhere, so what do we need them bottles for anyway?”
