A course about the Occupy Wall Street movement has been proposed at Columbia University in New York City, but it hasn’t been approved just yet, according to university officials.
The proposed course, “Occupy the Field: Global Finance, Inequality, Social Movement,” would teach students about the Occupy movement.
Students taking the course would be allowed to conduct fieldwork with Occupy Wall Street, according to The Columbia Daiy Spectator.
Rumours have been circulating that the class will be offered in this year’s spring semester, but these reports were “premature,” according to Brian Connolly, associate vice president for public affairs at Columbia.
The course was posted on the anthropology department’s website, according to The Columbia Daily Spectator, but has since been removed.
In an email, Connolly said the course isn’t listed in the official directory of classes and it can’t be offered before it has been officially approved.
“The study of contemporary political, economic and social issues is entirely appropriate and has a long history here,” Connolly said.
“But the fact is that the proposal for a new anthropology course involving fieldwork on this topic had yet to be considered for approval by the faculty committee on instruction.”
