Carleton administration is awaiting more information from the Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) before releasing the remaining student fees, according to vice-president (finance and administration) Duncan Watt.
“About $1.7 million was collected by CUSA vice-president (finance) Karim Khamisa [to support clubs and societies on campus], and the rest was paid by students for the health plan, [and is being distributed in the form of] opt-out cheques,” said CUSA president Obed Okyere.
The transfer totalled $5,489,216.
The next instalment should be transferred Dec. 31, Okyere said. However, the university said they still have concerns, and such a transfer is uncertain.
“Under the administrative agreement, CUSA is required to give us some financial information and we had some questions about their financial statement that they provided,” Watt said.
There’s some confusion surrounding an $800,000 discrepancy in spending on students’ services between CUSA’s October and November statements, according to Watt.
Watt said the remaining instalments will be released once CUSA provides a clearer picture of their finances.
Further delays could have a negative impact on student services on campus, Okyere said. CUSA operates nine service centres on campus, and student businesses like Oliver’s Pub and Rooster’s.
“Without the funds coming in, it is going to be very difficult for CUSA to be able to operate,” Okyere said. “We use money that we collected from students to pay for administrative fees and [fund] the services we provide for students.”
