Long-time national chair of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) Ronald I. Cohen has joined Carleton’s Faculty of Public Affairs as a senior fellow.
“I have been doing lectures at different universities across countries about broadcasting standard and broadcasting council every year,” Cohen said. “There’s lots of information I have [that] I will bring to faculty members as well as students.”
Cohen said he’s happy to be a resource to Carleton students who have interest in the issues of content on radio and TV.
“I play an important role in the development of broadcasting standard and broadcasting council, which is a special system and different from government system in the United States, England and New Zealand,” Cohen said. “I am excited to have this opportunity to provide my experiences and expertise to the Faculty of Public Affairs.”
Cohen has been national chair of the CBSC since 1993. He was also a law professor at McGill University and the founding chair of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
“Mr. Cohen certainly has the expertise to offer to faculty members and students, especially in journalism and communications, but also in the department of laws,” said Dean André Plourde, dean of the Faculty of Public Affairs.
Cohen will be available to give special lectures, in addition to being a resource to faculty members or students working on research projects, Plourde said.
Cohen’s appointment will begin Jan. 1, 2012 and extend until December 2013, according to a press release.
“I congratulate the Faculty of Public Affairs and the dean for having attracted this extraordinary Canadian to Carleton University,” said Carleton president Roseann Runte.
“His broad range of experience and interests from media, journalism, law, ethics and history are most impressive,” Runte said. “I am sure that students, faculty and staff will benefit from his wisdom and insights. I myself look forward to attending a lecture by him when he arrives on campus.”
