The Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) is launching its Fall Sexual Assault Awareness Week from Sept. 15-19.

The week’s name strikes at the very core of the problem: sexual assault.

There’s no sugar-coating or sidestepping a very serious problem. This year’s campaign has the potential to do a lot of great things on campus.

CUSA’s partnership with Equity Services is key. This campaign should hopefully be one of the most effective anti-sexual assault campaigns CUSA has ever organized.

There’s a strong focus on queer people and sexual violence in queer communities with three of the events involving these groups specifically. A resource fair is especially engaging for students who are new to the university and community as a whole.

Considering what’s been going on campus in the last few weeks, the university community should embrace this series of events.

We’re also in the midst of the “red zone,” the first eight weeks or so when universities report the highest number of sexual assaults.

This week of events couldn’t have come at a better time.

If Carleton and CUSA are to combat rape culture and sexual assault on campus, they should continue to plan more events like this: inclusive, pointed, and timely.
