Five Carleton Ravens soccer players were given Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East division all-star nods after wrapping up regular season play Oct. 23.

In addition to two women and three men, men’s head coach Sandy Mackie was named the OUA East coach of the year.

Briana De Souza, a third-year defender, was named to the OUA East all-star first team for her work at the heart of the Ravens’ defence, and first-year forward Nicole Filipow was named to the second team after an impressive rookie season, scoring six goals in 14 games.

“It’s the first time in my reign [as coach] that we’ve had a first year selected to all-stars,” said Alex McNutt, the women’s team coach. “What’s nice about it is [showing] what a good job the veterans are doing bringing the first years into the mix.”

Both of the women’s all-star players will be returning as Ravens next year.

Joey Kewin and Sam McHugh were named to the OUA East all-star first team for the men’s team, with Caki Simrooglu making the second team.

Kewin, a third-year midfielder, grabbed five goals this past season, while McHugh, a fourth-year midfielder, notched seven goals — good for 11th place in the league’s scoring charts.

“It’s always great as a player to be recognized for what you put in to the league and what you put in to the season,” said Kwesi Loney, who is second-in-command for the men’s team.

This was Kewin’s second consecutive nomination to the first team, after an impressive sophomore campaign.

“[Kewin’s] definitely a big part of our team and brings a little bit of style and flair to the game that makes him unpredictable,” Loney said.

Simrooglu, a third-year striker, scored nine goals this past season, which was good enough for eighth place in the scoring charts.

Mackie, who has spent 19 years with the Ravens, received his fifth OUA East coach of the year award after guiding the Ravens to a first-place finish in the OUA East.

“For me, watching [Mackie] perform is incredible,” Loney said. “To be doing this as long as he has and to have the success that he has is a true testament to his ability as a coach.”

While the women’s team saw their playoff dreams disappear after a 3-0 quarter-final loss to the Queen’s Golden Gaels Oct. 30, the men will continue their quest for a championship Nov. 5-6 in the OUA Final Four
