There have been eight vehicle break-ins on campus in just four days, according to department of university safety director Allan Burns.
Five cars were reported broken into Sept. 12, another Sept. 14 and two more were reported Sept. 15, he said.
Parking lot thieves are gaining entry to the vehicles by smashing windows and punching door locks with all sorts of tools, indicating they’re experienced, Burns said.
“These are crimes of opportunity. We give out information in order to try and limit the opportunity” he said, adding the university is in contact with Ottawa police as these are serious crimes that need to be addressed.
Items stolen have included loose change, laptops, iPods, headphones, chargers, and GPS devices, Burns said.
It’s not specifically [Carleton] that is being targeted by these car thefts. It is a problem in the surrounding area . . . keep your valuables out of sight,” Burns said, adding that it’s an easily avoidable crime.
