A record number of new graduate programs and concentrations — some the first of their kind in Canada — were introduced this year at Carleton, according to a press release.
John Shepherd, dean of graduate and postdoctoral affairs, said these 18 programs and concentrations, stretching from human computer interaction to political management, will draw from several faculties.
Carleton prides itself in real-world application, and the goal is to create programs “where there is clearly a social need,” Shepherd said.
“There’s a growing acceptance that if there’s a demand for professionals with skills in a specific area, then academic programs should reflect that, especially at the graduate level,” he added.
“These programs will put Carleton on the map in terms of the university’s strategic plan of defining dreams. They speak to interdisciplinarity, innovation, and outreach to the community,” Shepherd said.
The list of programs includes a master of infrastructure protection and international security, which is the first of its kind in North America. The new PhD in architecture is unique in Canada, according to the faculty of graduate and postdoctoral affairs website.
“Carleton is one of few universities worldwide that has the available resources and established research strengths necessary to offer a doctoral program in architecture,” the website states.
“This a great moment in the history of our school,” said Adriana Ross, one of six students admitted to the architecture PhD program.
“It is very exciting to be part of what is really a new level of research and dialogue added to the already unique undergrad and graduate programs,” Ross said.
“The program is framed to give students the knowledge and skills required to handle the expected changes in the profession.”
