The Carleton Ravens men’s basketball team fell to a third pre-season defeat against National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) opponents Aug. 16 at the Ravens’ Nest.
“It got ugly around the second half of the first quarter and we just couldn’t recuperate. We weren’t tough or fundamental anymore,” Shaver said.
Carleton struggled with their accuracy inside and outside the paint. The Zips recorded just over a 60 per cent accuracy rate on all shots combined, compared to the Ravens’ 52 per cent shooting percentage.
Carleton was missing two of their top players in Cole Hobin and Tyson Hinz, who are away due to their participation in the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China.
“Obviously, it’d be good to have them back but we have to focus on what we have and try to win games,” said second-year guard Philip Scrubb.
In the fourth and final quarter, the Ravens came within one point of tying the game only to see their hold slip away in the last minute of play.
Although the Ravens aren’t getting the results they’re looking for, both Shaver and Scrubb took a positive spin on the recent losses.
“It’s not great to lose but we’re working hard and constantly our butts off and doing the right thing,” Shaver said.
“The thing is to improve every game. We’ve done some things well and worked hard but just have to find a way to pull it out in the end,” Scrubb said.
The Ravens are back in action at the Ravens’ Nest Aug. 25 against the University of Albany.
