Renovations at Haven Books have taken longer than usual due to many old features in the building, dating back to the 1920s.

Some of the renovations include expanding the sales floor to accommodate more books and people, said Carleton University Students’ Association vice-president (finance) Karim Khamisa.

“We’re breaking down the wall on the right and in the back to turn those spaces into part of the sales floor,” Khamisa said.

The additional space will allow more professors to make their textbooks available at Haven, resulting in more textbooks for less money. The extra room in Haven will also make it less crowded in the store, reducing the line and wait-times outside.

Haven’s construction is set to be done by September so students can purchase their back-to-school books, Khamisa said.

The demolition portion of the construction has been completed and steps are now being taken towards reinforcing the floors and finalizing the new layout.

“I’m excited to see the results and look forward to it being less crowded in the bookstore,” said third-year journalism student Veronika Gorlova.

Haven is still open for business throughout the summer and is temporarily operating out of the second floor.

A spokesperson from Haven was not available for comment.
