A Carleton student has died after he was struck by a car the night of Oct. 14 on the 401 near the village of Lansdowne, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
Arif Merani, 22, was driving east on Highway 401 around 11:45 p.m. when he pulled over to check a flat tire, OPP Const. Judy King said.
He was struck by a black Nissan after he got out of his car. Police were called and Merani was pronounced dead at the scene, according to King.
A Carleton official confirmed Merani was a law student and a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at Carleton.
“The university is saddened . . . It’s always tragic when stuff like this happens,” he said.
The university is reaching out to professors and family, he said, according to protocol they have in place for the sudden death of students. The university can also provide counselling to friends and members of the community, he said.
No charges have been laid as of Oct. 15 afternoon, but King said the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the OPP.
