Approximately 25 people attended a Jan. 25 sex toy tutorial as part of Carleton Disability Awareness Centre’s (CDAC) “Cum as you are” pride week event.

Run by local sex shop Venus Envy, the workshop reached out largely to disabled individuals and consisted of a sex toy tutorial, promoting safety when using the devices.

“It’s a way to open people’s eyes to see that not everything is one size fits all,” said programming co-ordinator Colleen Bethour.

Different attitudes towards sex and commonly held beliefs by disabled people were explored via video.

“It was so nice to have people with disabilities and able-bodied people actively discussing the issue at hand,” Bethour said.

Although directed at persons with disabilities, she said the event was open to everyone.

“We love everyone here at CDAC,” she said. “We are just trying to make Carleton a better place by incorporating disability issues into our daily dialogue.”

“Just through the small act of promoting awareness, that’s forming equality and to me that’s succeeding, that is true success,” she said.
