The working group looking into developing a partnership between Carleton and Navitas, a private, Australian-based company that specializes in international student recruitment, won’t meet their expected January deadline.

The working group, who is meeting with Navitas for the first time this week, was supposed to report Jan. 31 but asked for an extension in order to finish its work, Carleton’s provost and vice-president (academic) Peter Ricketts said via email.

When Carleton-Navitas talks began, its possible creation was hotly debated.

Initial talks between Navitas and the administration over the summer were met with opposition from the Carleton University Academic Staff Association and Canadian Union Public Employees Local 4500, which represents teaching assistants and contract employees.

The group is also planning a trip to Simon Fraser University (SFU), Navitas’ first Canadian partner, “to see firsthand how their partnership with Navitas is working,” Ricketts said.

Ricketts said he will review the state of the report along with Brian Mortimer, Carleton’s associate vice-president (academic) and chair of the working group, at the end of February.

Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) vice-president and member of the working group Elizabeth Whyte said Navitas will be making a presentation to the working group Jan. 27.
