The Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team rebounded from last week’s loss to the undefeated McGill Redmen with a resounding 7-2 win over the Concordia Stingers Jan. 21 at the Ice House.

First-year forward Joe Pleckaitis, who finished the game with three points, was delighted with how the Ravens responded to last week’s disappointment.

“It was really important to have this [win],” Pleckaitis said grinning from ear to ear. “We want to catch McGill. That’s our goal.”

Ravens head coach Marty Johnston was also pleased with the performance, praising his players for rebounding from a tough stretch on the road.

“We played the last three out of four games on the road and we didn’t have the success we wanted to,” Johnston said. “But we took care of business in our home rink and that’s what you like to see.”

The Ravens have now won eight of their 10 home games this season.

And their confidence at the Ice House showed early on as third-year forward Joey Manley opened the scoring only 31 seconds into the game. Pleckaitis followed seven minutes later with his seventh goal of the season.

Concordia pulled a goal back midway through the first but the Ravens looked unfazed and with their first line stretching the defence, goals looked guaranteed.

Third-year forward Andrew Self lit up the net with two goals in two minutes, as Concordia struggled to deal with the Ravens forecheck in the opening frame.

Concordia again hauled themselves back into contention at the start of the second period but Manley popped up with his second of the night and 13th of the season with six minutes left in the period.

The third period was a rout as the Ravens exerted their dominance. Heavy hits were traded as Concordia took out their frustration by running over goalie Matthew Dopoud twice.

Dopoud, though, wasn’t worried about the Stingers late hits.

“Its hard to go against guys that are pretty big and hitting after the whistle but I think we did a pretty good job of hitting them back and getting back in their faces,” Dopud said.

Just before the midway point of the third period, second-year forward Connor Barrett struck on another power play for the Ravens, with a shot that slipped past the outstretched glove of the Stingers’ backup netminder.

Then third-year forward Ryan Berard showed why he was called up to the Canadian squad for the World University Games by adding a final goal on the powerplay for the Ravens.

Despite the lopsided victory, Johnston was quick to emphasize that the team wasn’t going to get carried away after the dominant performance.

“We have two important games against McGill coming up,” he said. We’re taking it a game at a time.”

With six games remaining — four being at home — the Ravens sit fourth in the Ontario University Athletics East standings, three points behind the Nipissing Lakers and UQTR Patriotes, and three points ahead of the Stingers.
