Do you know what is special about today?
It’s not just March 26, 2009, but it’s also Make Your Own Holiday Day, as well as National Women’s History Month and the International Year of Astronomy. It was also recently National Bubble Week and Crochet Week.
With so many groups to raise awareness for and celebrate, are they all really getting the dedication they deserve?
While you can try to don shamrock socks, go without a bra and wear a crochet sweater to try to celebrate March, somehow the spirit is lost, and that’s still neglecting National Pig Day, Frozen Food Day and Pi Day.
While many of these days and weeks mean something to specific groups, need we set the day in stone?
Nurses Week may be celebrated at hospitals and Teachers’ Day at schools, but it would be best to appreciate them every day rather than putting effort into a mini-celebration of which few understand the importance.
Few of these days seem to be successful, although Black History Month and Earth Day seem to have caught on. That is because these days are marked with significance and events that all can enjoy, rather than just appealing to a small group.
By no means should all “days” be banished, as who doesn’t enjoy knowing there is a Bunsen Burner Day? But perhaps groups should consider the audience and impact before deciding that their cause is worthy of a “day” or “week.”
If there is the passion, the following, and the events to support the cause, then may your efforts be successful; otherwise, it seems to be a cheap and ineffective advertising ploy.
On that note: Don’t forget, April 31 is Charlatan Appreciation Day, so enjoy.
