The Carleton Ravens men’s ultimate frisbee team failed to repeat as national champions last weekend in the Canadian University Ultimate Championships, as they dropped their semifinal tilt to Guelph Oct. 17 in Ottawa, Ont.

After defeating McGill handily in the tournament quarterfinal, the Ravens were unable to get by Guelph for the second consecutive day. The Ravens fell 8-7 to Guelph Oct. 16 in round-robin action.

Despite the disappointing result, Ravens veteran Bryce Ring said he was pleased with the team’s effort.

“We can take some pride in that every game we lost, we made the other team’s life a living hell during the game, by running them into the ground on offence and playing the hardest defence they had to have faced in the tournament,” Ring said.

Ring said the team has captains Kielan Way and Ryan Bauer to thank for holding the squad to the highest standards throughout the season.

“We worked very hard to build up everyone's skills to have a very deep roster,” Ring said. “Overall I believe they accomplished that goal, especially with the rookies on the team. They may not have seen that much playing time during the tournament, but when they did they impressed many of the veterans with their effort on the field.”

The Ravens B team also competed in the tournament.

“They are new, but show promise in the future,” Ring said. “We were very happy to have them part of the program.”

Meanwhile, the Carleton Stealth women’s ultimate frisbee team finished fifth in last weekend’s championships — reaching their goal of surpassing their sixth place rank going into the tournament.

Carleton defeated the Université de Montreal 12–4 in their final game of the tournament Oct. 17.

“Everyone on the team really stepped up their game and put in an extraordinary amount of effort,” said team captain Stephanie Pineau. “We were all thrilled with the results.”
