The Carleton Ravens women’s basketball team won two out of three games last weekend in the 26th annual Subway Centennial Tournament at Dalhousie University in Halifax, N.S.
The Ravens opened the tournament Oct. 15 with a convincing 81-62 victory over the tournament host Dalhousie Tigers, before falling short to the Cape Breton Capers with a 61-59 loss the following day. They then closed the tournament with a narrow 67-66 defeat over the St. Francis Xavier X-Women Oct. 17.
“They were close games, we played really hard and I think that we dominated for the most part,” said Ravens head coach Taffe Charles. “We outworked everybody. We definitely improved this weekend.”
In their tournament finale Oct. 17, Alyson Bush hit a late jumper in the fourth quarter to give the Ravens a three point lead, with only seconds remaining on the clock.
The X-Women’s Rebecca Sheehan managed to respond with a two-pointer, but it wouldn’t be enough for the win, as the Ravens held on for a one-point victory. Fifth-year forward Ashleigh Cleary led the Ravens in points with 14.
Despite out-rebounding the Capers by a 52-44 margin Oct. 16, the Ravens could not close out the victory in their second game of the tournament. Rookie guard Krista Vanslingerland put up an early six points for the lady Ravens and Kendall Macleod, the team’s leading scorer, recorded 11 points. Guard Courtney Smith had 10 points and was named player-of-the game.
“We probably should have won Saturday,” Charles said. “We missed a whole bunch of free throws. We were eight for 20 from the line, and [the Capers] missed 10.”
Outscoring the Tigers 25-15 in the first quarter, the Ravens came out with a bang Oct. 15 in their tournament opener.
Bailey Lomas, who is coming off an ACL surgery from last year, had 11 points for the Ravens. Macleod and Cleary both had team-highs of 15 points apiece.
Cleary was named player-of-the-game for Carleton. And for her efforts over the weekend, she was recognized as a tournament all-star.
“[Cleary] is playing really well in terms of consistency level,” Charles said.
Looking forward, Charles said the team needs to improve its consistency.
“We’ve got to be a bit better, more refined,” he said. “We’ve got three tough games at home [this] weekend. We’ve got to get better at finishing.”
The Ravens host the Concordia Stingers, Bishop’s Gaiters, and Memorial Universities this weekend at the fifth annual Metro Glebe Tournament held at Carleton.
