In a game that featured two of Canada’s best young basketball stars, it was their siblings that shone the brightest in the first quarterfinal matchup of the Canadian University Sport (CIS) men’s basketball championship on Friday at Scotiabank Place.

The Bekkering brothers of the University of Calgary Dinos, fifth-year forward Henry and fourth-year forward Ross, lead their team to a 76-67 win over the Concordia University Stingers.

Concordia featured first team All-Canadian point guard Damien Buckley, and his brother, fifth-year guard Dwayne.

The game proved to be a matchup of the Calgary’s height and athleticism against Concordia’s flashy passing game.

The second-seeded Dinos has a considerable height advantage over the seventh-seeded Stingers, with their five starters averaging a height of 6”.

The first half began with scrappy play as both teams fought for the ball on every possession and played high-pressure defence that lead to numerous turnovers.

Henry Bekkering had several crowd-rousing slam-dunks in the first quarter, earning his reputation as a Youtube sensation.

Not to be outdone by his older brother, Ross provided several jams in the second quarter, as well as an impressive block.

The teams went into halftime with the score tied at 32.

In the third quarter, Calgary began to play more aggressively, opening up a considerable lead. This stemmed from a determination to dominate the offensive and defensive glass. Calgary out-rebounded Concordia 40 to 27 in the game.

Going into the fourth, Calgary led 58-42.

Undeterred by the large deficit, the Stingers battled back the entire fourth quarter, relying largely on Dwayne Buckley, who led Concordia with 19 points and played the entire game with a knee brace.

Inevitably, the high-flying athletes of Calgary would prove to be too much, squeaking past the underdog Stingers by nine points.

The Bekkering brothers were dominant throughout the game, with Henry contributing 25 points and 5 rebounds. Ross, who was Calgary’s player of the game, led both teams with 26 points and 15 boards, along with six steals and three blocks.

The Dinos effectively shut down Quebec Student Sports Federation (QSSF) MVP Damian Buckley, as he was limited to six points, despite leading all players with 40 minutes of playtime.

Calgary head coach Dan Vanhooren noted that limiting Buckley was a large part of the game plan.

“Our plan to play the zone was to make sure we had two guys looking after Damian most of the game so that he couldn’t create easy baskets for them,” he said.

Ross Bekkering says the team still has work to do before their next game.

"[We can] definitely handle pressure a little better. Concordia is a long, athletic team that forced us into a bunch of turnovers,” he said. If we can handle that in our second game, I think we’re going to be really successful."

The Dinos will face off against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in a rematch of the western conference final that saw Calgary make an impressive comeback for the win.
