An OC Transpo bus driver is in hospital after two buses were involved in a collision on University Road near the Athletics Centre.

The buses collided at approximately 9:30 a.m. Aug. 1, according to Special Constable Andrew Prekob with the Ottawa Police Service.

One bus rear-ended the second and continued on to the sidewalk leading to the Athletics Centre, knocking over a lamppost and becoming wedged between a traffic light and a tree.

According to Ottawa Fire Services, the driver had to be removed by firefighters using the jaws of life cut him from his seat. The driver suffered minor injuries to his leg and foot.

Only a few passengers were on the bus at the time of the collision, with none of them suffering injuries.

Ottawa police officers, Carleton’s department of university safety officers and OC Transpo officials were on the scene shortly after the accident.

The rear-ended bus was towed away shortly after 10 a.m., with minor damage to its rear, Prekob said.

The other bus remained on the scene until after 12 p.m. when a tow truck arrived. The bus had extensive damage to its front, with the front windshield smashed.

The department of university safety, Ottawa Police Service, and OC Transpo were unavailable for comment.
