The English language is taking a nosedive. Texting and instant-messaging have led to the creation of a new, short-hand version of the language. This appears to be leading to a general decline in proper grammar usage — a pet peeve for many people.

Its no longer simply about writing ‘u’ instead of ‘you’, ‘c’ instead of ‘see’ or ‘b’ instead of ‘be’ when sending someone a text message with a limited character count. Acronyms replacing complete idioms, such as LOL, FML and WTF, are creeping up everywhere, especially with the dawn of micro-blogging sites like Twitter which limits each post to 140 characters.

But these shortened words and phrases are just the top of a long list of sins being committed at an alarming rate across the English-speaking world. People dont seem to care about the proper use of common homonyms like your and you’re or there, their and they’re or its and it’s. Instead, their just picking the shortest versions and sticking to them no matter what their writing about.

Status updates on Twitter and Facebook have furthered this problem. As mentioned above, Twitter limits posts to 140 characters, not leaving much space for lengthy thoughts. Facebook also limits status updates, but it does give some breathing room for people who like to ramble, allowing 420 characters. Instead of shortening there thoughts, their instead shortening there words to describe there thoughts.

WTF people? Were butchering our beautiful language with short-hand and misusing words that sound the same. Grammar and spelling rulz were put in place so that we could understand each other in writing. But now we cant tell whether people are referring 2 personal belongings or to a place over their. Its dreadful! Thanks to new social media technology were completely confusing eachother with our terrible literacy skills.

Its time we all take a stand against this great injustice. We must take it upon ourselves 2 educate people on the values of proper grammar, correct spelling and the importance of spelling shit out. Not only because were annoying the increasingly significant geezer portion of the population, but also because the deterioration of our grammar and stuff is just the beginning of the eventual downfall of English-speaking civilization. I dont want to live in a world where I FHML. Id rather live in a world where I can actually and truly LOL. Wouldnt you?
