Speaker and entrepreneur Drew Dudley spoke to first-year students in the Raven’s Nest Sept. 6 to share his ideas on leadership and success.
The final day of orientation week was led by the speaker, who is known for his TED talks and re-appropriation of leadership, which he contends is up to each individual.
“Let’s redefine leadership. It’s not about changing the world, but about striving to act in a way that makes it more likely to have a positive impact on your own life and the lives of others every single day,” he said.
He said that leadership has been made into a concept which revolves about changing the world. Instead, leadership should revolve around changing one world — your own.
This occurs by redefining leadership as a series of “lollipop moments,” he said. He described these moments as actions that make others’ lives substantially better.
Dudley’s talk was coloured with anecdotes, and personal experiences. He emphasized the importance of those who inadvertently educate others.
“It has been the ‘accidental teachers’ in my life who have passed on some of the most transformative lessons,” he said, adding that accidental teachers inspire everyone.
