Starting next year, Carleton students will be able to able to drop their class on the very last day of the course due to a policy change supported by the Carleton Academic Student Government (CASG).

Until recently, the final day to drop courses rests about two weeks prior to the last class. Students will be able to drop a course on the final date of class, prior to their exam. This major change to the Carleton academic calendar was supported by many members of the CASG, including its president, James Splinter.

“Sometimes students need that extra time to get a better idea of how they’re doing in a course,” Splinter said.

While there was no serious backlash against the change, some professors challenged the idea because they felt it could lead to students not taking their course seriously.  However, Splinter said he believes differently.

“Now people can gauge where they stand in the class, and I think there will be less number of fails,” he said.

Students can expect this new calendar to take effect in the 2010-11 academic year.
