Senior night at the Ice House ended in disappointment for Carleton’s women’s hockey team, as the Ravens fell 2–1 to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in overtime.
Carleton struck first and controlled long stretches of play, but a late equalizer forced extra time before Ontario Tech sealed the win.
“I think we played a much more consistent game today and made some adjustments through the game,” head coach Stacey Colarossi said after the game.
A penalty-heavy first period gave both teams multiple power-play opportunities, but neither side could break through. With the Ravens and Ridgebacks playing a disciplined, physical game and protecting the puck well, the score was deadlocked at 0–0 until the third period.
“Our second period our goalie kept us in the game with a couple key saves,” Colarossi said of Ravens goalie Kaitlyn Langille.
The Ravens entered the third period aiming to stay consistent.
“I thought overall we had lots of really good moments,” team captain Avery Krawchuk said.
Five minutes into the third, Krawchuk took a two-minute interference penalty, negating the Ravens’ power play with Ridgebacks forward Robyn Storey already in the box.
After serving her two minutes, Krawchuk stepped back onto the ice — and less than ten seconds later, was able to score the first goal of the night and her second of the season.
Assisted by Shannon McDonald, Carleton took the lead 1-0.
“We really needed that,” Krawchuk said.
“If we score first we win 80 per cent of our games, so that’s been a key for us,” Colarossi said.
After the Ravens’ goal, Ontario Tech responded with increased pressure, and Ridgebacks forward Cassandra Delves tied the game with five minutes remaining in the third period.
“The goal that they scored there was an unfortunate situation,” Colarossi said.
With intense play from all players on the ice, the Ridgebacks clinched the victory with 30 seconds left in overtime as Julianne Davidson brought Ontario Tech to their ninth win of the season.
The Ravens remained outwardly proud of their effort.
“I didn’t think we played a bad game today,” Krawchuk said.
After a 2–0 loss to the TMU Bold the day before, the Ravens closed out their home schedule on a high note.
“I was much happier with the performance today than yesterday,” Colarossi added.
As the final home game of the season, it was also senior night, with the team saying goodbye to Abigail Byrne, Nicole Hunter, Hayden Serniuk, and Lanie Guimond.
“The four girls who have graduated have been on our team for a long time, so it’s kinda sad to see them leave,” Krawchuk said.
“Sucks that we couldn’t get the win for them but still a fun game and still an important game for them.”
The Carleton Ravens will face off the TMU Bold on the road, February 13th. Puck drop is at 6:15 p.m.
“Hopefully close out the season with a few wins,” Krawchuk said.
