Millie Langlais woke up to an inch of water slowly spreading across the floor of her Glengarry House dorm as the residence building experienced a water leak.
Langlais said she tried to use towels, a jacket and a sweater to stop the water from rushing under her door on Sunday.
“We woke up, and the water was rushing in, and we tried to stop it,” she told the Charlatan.
“Obviously, it didn’t work.”
Carleton University relocated some students to hotels after the leak — with no estimated time of restoration. The university did not say how many students were impacted.
“The power remains out at Glengarry House as a result of a water leak that impacted several floors,” Carleton said in a statement. “Facilities Management Planning is actively engaged in rectifying the situation.”
Cleanup work was underway Tuesday to help remove water from the building

She said the power and heat went out the night before – Saturday — and wondered whether the heat being switched back on might have caused a pipe to burst.
Langlais has been living in the Residence Inn near the airport for the past two nights, a stay the university is paying for. She said she tried to move back into the dorm on Monday, but her room still wasn’t ready.
“It smelled really bad and stuff is still damp,” she said.
Langlais said she was also trying to study for an exam on that same day but struggled to prepare amid the logistical chaos.
Gavin Doherty was living at the new Rideau House residence during the floods in Glengarry House.
Doherty added he wasn’t getting any hot water for his showers for a couple of days leading up to the incident. Half of the cafeteria was also dark for a bit, he added, with parts of the campus also left without Wi-Fi.
“It’s all a bit of a surprise,” he said of the campus disruptions.
The university said “no time estimate for repairs is currently available.”
