The Charlatan is Carleton University’s independent newspaper. Run by students for students, the paper has been providing the Carleton community with news and entertainment for more than 75 years. 

Job Description: Summer Social Media Manager

The Charlatan Summer Social Media Manager is a creative part-time position with influence in many aspects of our paper. The Summer Social Media Manager will report to the Editor-in-Chief and have a close relationship with the editorial staff. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Posting all articles to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter;
  • Creating Instagram story posts (for cross-post on Facebook) in Canva using existing templates;
  • Creating at least one weekly TikTok related to the Charlatan’s coverage;
  • Monitoring the Charlatan’s web presence through social media analytics;
  • Moderating social media comment sections and direct messages as necessary;
  • Working to increase user engagement across social media platforms;
  • Ensuring all social media work coheres with the Charlatan’s branding, social media policy and ethics;
  • Undertaking occasional special projects to improve the visual appeal and efficiency of the Charlatan social media;
  • Other duties as required.

Characteristics of a strong applicant include:

  • Experience using social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok);
  • Experience using Canva and/or Photoshop to create engaging visuals;
  • Knowledge of social media analytics;
  • Knowledge of the Carleton University community;

Other Important Information

The position requires part-time work beginning mid-June. 

Job Type:

  • Part-time, approx. 10 hours every two weeks

Salary:

  • $170, paid every two weeks

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday, flexible working hours

Experience:

  • At least one (1) year creating social media content (preferred)
  • At least one (1) year of involvement in the Carleton community (required)

Location:

  • Remote or Ottawa, Ont.
