OK, I am the first one to call to mind all the of the things wrong with Valentine ’s Day.
It is used as an excuse of a holiday because of the need for corporations to get people back into stores after the January slump.
There is also the argument that people should show their love every day of the year.
I’ve been there, and written that blog entry in many different parts of my life, single and in a relationship.
But this Valentine's Day I am turning over a new leaf.
What sparked this change in heart?
Well it could have to do with the wonderful man in my life, the heart-shaped box of chocolates beside me in bed or the dozen roses sitting on my night stand. I know, how terribly cliché, right?
Well I happen to be in a lovey-dovey kind of feeling this Feb. 14, so here is a list of the best Valentine’s songs.
Whether you are taken, or just a hopeless romantic, hopefully some of these songs can brighten your day.
And if worse comes to worse, remember all that lovely chocolate goes on sale tomorrow.
Happy Valentines Day
1. Stumbling in – Great Big Sea
With a line like, “God knows what causes an angel to love a fool,” this song just begs to pull on the listeners heart strings. Not widely known for love songs, Great Big Sea make a classic story out of this one.
2. Marry You – Glee Cast
A fun number from the wedding episode of the show is the perfect song to put on that Valentine’s playlist. Warning: not a good idea to sing this to a commitment phobic boyfriend, may cause you to refer to the best anti-love songs.
3. Crazy Little Thing Called Love – Queen
Freddy Mercury and the boys of Queen make this the perfect Valentine’s song. Love is a crazy little thing but when you are in it, it sure is a lot of fun.
4. No One Needs to Know – Shania Twain
This song could be seen as a horror song for many people, your significant other already planning the wedding day, number of children and future dog’s name. However this song is a sweet country tune that can also be seen as a sweet testament to knowing when someone is the one.
5. Sweater Song – Hedley
A newer song on the list, and to be honest many might read a little too much into the lyrics in this song, but for me it is sincerely a great love song. Written about a solider going to Afghanistan leaving his girlfriend behind but then returning safely, I dare you not to get slightly choked up. I dare you.
6. One and One – Teitur
This entry is a little less known but no less sweet — so sweet, in fact, some dentists may warn against too much consumption. A simple chorus stating, “do you want to be my one and only love” with a simple answer from all the melted hearts in the world.
7. Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered – Ella Fitzgerald
Not the traditional song chosen for a list by Ella Fitzgerald. Usually the song “At Last” is selected, but to be honest that is reserved to a different category or wedding songs, which quickly becomes a whole other list. Instead we have this little song from Ella that reminds the listener of the feeling of not being able to sleep when love comes into your life. The dreamy feeling makes me float off to that dream world that only Ella’s voice can.
8. Silly Love Songs – Wings
The world has NOT had enough of Silly Love Songs — point in case this list.
9. We Will Still Need a Song – Hawksley Workman
This song by the wonderful Hawksley reminds that even when we are down and out, sad, or angry we will still need a song. . . and love. As he puts it, “we will still need a song to carry our love away.” And indeed with a song like this love can never be too far away.
10. February Air (Acoustic Version) – Lights
This song is a requirement. Not only does it talk about getting cold in February (which happens to be the month that Valentine’s Day falls in) it also talks about knowing your loved ones face like the back of your hand; a beautiful song and fitting one for Valentine’s Day.
11. Shiver – Coldplay
You cannot escape a Coldplay song on a list of love songs. They do the hurting, aching love song so very well. The tough part really is to choose. This one finds Martin in love with someone who doesn’t notice him, sigh, and yet a beautiful song of devotion.
12. Everything – Alanis Morissette
“I can be a nightmare of the grandest kind,” not always the best way to start a dating advertisement, but the perfect way to start this love song about being accepted by the one you love for being just who you. One of the best lines in the song, “you see all my light, and you love my dark,” that is what love is supposed to be.
13. Falling Slowly – Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova
From the movie “Once,” a painfully beautiful love story happens in this Oscar-winning song. Indeed, “raise your hopeful voice you have a choice,” and I chose to fall head-over-heels for this beautifully written song.
14. White Blank Page – Mumford and Sons
OK, not completely loving, but this song is so fantastic to pass up and the first line, “can you lie next to her and give her your heart?” Simply puts on the line that you need to give me your love. Mumford and Sons, you already have my love.
15. Syrup and Honey – Duffy
“Don’t you be wasting all your money, on syrup and honey, because I am sweet enough.” Indeed Duffy, you are sweet enough, and this song is the perfect desert to a list of yummy love songs.
