I don’t have time to go to the gym! At the beginning of the year, I promised myself that I would exercise at least three times a week. I now have a good fitness week if I go to the gym once. I wondered how other people balance their schoolwork with working out, so I spoke to Carleton students to see how they sneak in some non-traditional exercises while still having fun.

“Do you mean like bench pressing your mattress or something? I know someone who does that. It’s a certain weight, right? So it’s just as good a workout. I do yoga. Yoga and swimming.”
Samy Njoku, third-year economics

“I try and walk when I’m going somewhere. Like, when you’re going to a grocery store, instead of parking right at the front, you park farther.”
Daniel Kamau, second-year civil engineering

“I dance, swim. I like salsa dancing, but that’s not anything crazy. I don’t think I do anything too, too crazy. . . . I’ve seen people do workouts on the subway. They just do like chin-ups or whatever on the bar. They’re pretty hardcore. . . . Yoga is good. ”
Jennie Elias, first-year journalism

“I guess weight lifting is pretty traditional. I really can’t say that I’ve done anything out of the ordinary
. . . . I guess I do take stairs a lot and I bike every day, and for a few years I actually did cheerleading.”
Brendan Smith, fourth-year computer science

“I like to dance. There’s this Latin and ballroom that I’m doing, and I like salsa a lot. . .and kayaking, but
other than that I usually stick to the gym.”
Alisha Seguin, third-year history and English
