RRRA elections rev up in residence: Residents’ First

Members of the Residents’ First slate for the upcoming Rideau River Residence Association (RRRA) elections said they are focusing their campaign platform around five main goals.
One of their ideas for next year is to create a safety shuttle bus that runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights to both Gatineau and the Byward Market.
The Residents’ First candidates said they want to make this a free and safe alternative to and from student “hot spots.”
Presidential candidate Ian Widgett said although this would be their most expensive endeavour, “you can’t put a price on student safety.”
Creating more jobs for residence students and improving student space are two other goals outlined in their campaign platform.
Widgett said higher profile jobs are currently being eliminated or given to off-campus students.
“Jobs should be going to residence students because that’s who we serve,” he said.
If elected, Residents’ First will try to work out a lease with the university to rent out classrooms in Residence Commons to create a student lounge.
Vice-president (administration) candidate Adam Dewar said they want to improve RRRA services by keeping longer office hours and making sure Abstention shelves are stocked.
“We want to make sure products are there 99 per cent of the time as opposed to 75 per cent,” Dewar said.
Ashley Armstrong, vice-president (programming) candidate, said she would like to create two benefit concerts next year as a way to give back to the Ottawa community.
She also said she hopes to increase student participation in residence events next year.
She said she “wants to keep the energy pumping all year long, not just at the beginning and end of the year.”
All three candidates feel their past experience will serve them well in the RRRA office.
Last year, Widgett was both the Residence Issues Co-ordinator, and chair of the Financial Review Committee. These roles are now assumed by the RRRA president.
Armstrong is currently a floor rep in Glengarry and spent two-and-a-half years as an assistant to an event planner.
Dewar is a faculty of science representative for the Carleton Academic Student Government and a Carleton University Students’ Association councillor.
He said it’s an honour to represent students.
“It’s not about us, it’s about them,” he said.
