Let’s talk about sex, baby: RRRA hosts Sex Week

The Rideau River Residence Association (RRRA) educated students on sex positivity at its Sex Week events held from Oct. 2-6. Brittany Galler, the vice president (programming) of RRRA and co-ordinator for the awareness week, said its aim was to have an interactive and friendly discussion about topics related to sex, such as sexuality and consent, in a non-judgmental environment. “Studies have shown that the first few months of university are critical, statistically speaking, for occurrences of sexual violence. Because of the high sexual violence rates at this time of the year, it is extremely important to have events such as this one to promote consent culture, safe sex, and healthy relationships,” Galler said. Disqualified slate abandons legal action

The original winning slate in the 2017 Rideau River Residence Association (RRRA) election that was disqualified due to electoral violations has decided to stop pursuing legal action against the association. Fresh RRRA’s three candidates—presidential candidate Nayla Al-Ajami, vice-president (programming) candidate Anthony Hajji and vice-president (administration) candidate Connor Thibodeau—expressed their intent to take legal action after the decision to hold another election was nullified by Patrick Watson, RRRA’s executive director. In an Aug. 15 Facebook post, Al-Ajami announced the decision to not pursue legal action, thanking the slate’s supporters and volunteers while vowing to “never forget the 50 votes we won by.” According to Al-Ajami, her slate decided to stop legal action because a lawsuit would be too expensive. “The cost […]

Abstentions re-opens early after accounting update

Abstentions, the Rideau River Residence Association’s (RRRA) convenience store, has re-opened two months earlier than expected after an accounting system upgrade. In April, RRRA announced that the store, located in Residence Commons, would be closed until September to update its accounting system. However, RRRA vice-president (administration) Jacob Howell said the update took much less time than expected. As a result, the store re-opened more than two months early, on June 26. The new system, Vend, uses an iPad to better keep track of purchases, costs and profits, Howell said. He added that a subscription to Vend costs $80 per month. “It’s more of a tool for us to use to serve our students,” he said. Besides a “more efficient speed” […]

RRRA’s Abstentions closed for the summer

The Rideau River Residence Association (RRRA) has opted to close its convenience store in Residence Commons for the summer. “Tomorrow is the LAST DAY! That abstenstions [sic] will be open until September! Come get what is left before it is all gone!” read an April 21 post on RRRA’s Facebook page. According to Hyder Naqvi, RRRA’s president, Abstentions is closed for an upgrade to its accounting system. “This will allow Abstentions to increase profits, reduce expenses, and create a better system to serve students,” Naqvi said via Facebook. Despite the store’s popularity with summer residence guests, Naqvi said Abstentions’ decreased summer activity compared to the fall and winter terms means the closure will not lead to a loss in profit. Reflections of the past: Stories behind the tunnel murals

When walking through the tunnels on a cold winter day, have you ever wondered what in the world those murals are all about? Every mural in the tunnel has a story behind it and each carry lifelong memories. Teams, clubs, and organizations have murals painted throughout the tunnel system. According to the Carleton University Kayak Club (CUKC)’s website, club members painted their mural—the club logo—in 2011 after approval from the university. “We thought . . . it was going to take us about three hours to finish the whole painting,” the CUKC website said. “[But] after 10 long, hot, sweaty hours the hard work had paid off.” The website said the mural painters started with a coat of white paint […]
