From cockroaches to mice: campus restaurants talk pest control

Cockroaches, mice, and flies are all things that people don’t want near their food. But what do campus restaurants do if customers complain about it? Blake Brooks, the manager at Oliver’s Pub & Patio, said there’s a cockroach issue all over campus. “There has been a cockroach issue in all of my 15 years at Carleton, so we’re not going to lie and say there’s no cockroaches spotted,” Brooks said. “It’s up to the customer what they choose to do. We don’t have a major problem and we haven’t had many customer issues.” Brooks added that if a student sees a pest in Oliver’s, he would “take care of that individual pest.” According to him, pest issues will only get […]

CUSA promotes businesses with contest

The Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) is giving $2,000 towards one lucky student’s tuition for the 2018-19 academic year. The catch? To be considered, students have to take a picture of themselves or their friends at a CUSA business and post it to Instagram using #tuitionbycusa. CUSA runs four major businesses: Oliver’s Pub & Patio, Rooster’s Coffeehouse, Henry’s Convenience Store, and Haven Books. According to Travis Lindgren, CUSA’s general manager, the contest aims to draw students to these businesses. “There’s a lot of large, multi-million-dollar brands on campus . . . and it’s competitive,” Lindgren said. “[CUSA is] a non-profit though, right? So these businesses are vital to everything. They are a big revenue source, and are very important to the […]

CUSA cuts transaction fees with new app

The Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) has introduced a local mobile app that allows users to receive change on their phones.  ChangeJar is a free Ottawa-based app that works like a banking card, allowing customers to deposit money into a ChangeJar account or Facebook Messenger to make purchases, or to receive change electronically instead of receiving cash. According to CUSA president Zameer Masjedee, the student association introduced ChangeJar to Oliver’s Pub & Patio, Henry’s Convenience Store, and Rooster’s Coffeehouse last week. “One of the main advantages of ChangeJar is that it encourages students to make more transactions that are cash-based, so less of a focus on credit scores,” Masjedee said. “More like spending money that you actually have and is […]

Oliver’s runs almost $120,000 deficit

Oliver’s Pub & Patio will be making changes to its menu for the upcoming year after the business reported a net loss of almost $120,000 for the past academic year. According to Blake Brooks, the manager of Oliver’s, a lot of time was spent this summer with the Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) executives to find ways to make the pub more profitable. He said they have come up with ways of restructuring their food menu to increase profits. “We are not immune to the price increases you see in your day to day purchases of food and alcohol,” Brooks said in an email. “We are impacted the same way general consumers are.” Brooks said it is not just Oliver’s […]
