Not Our Policy demonstrators host rally on campus

Not Our Policy demonstrators held a rally March 2 and hung a banner in front of the Carleton University sign on Bronson Avenue, in spite of a confrontation with Campus Safety two weeks prior. Three students attempting to put a banner up in the same spot were approached and told they were violating mischief and vandalism laws by Campus Safety officers on Feb. 16. They were also told they could be charged criminally for their actions. Campus Safety confronts Not Our Policy campaigners

Demonstrators involved with the Not Our Policy campaign were confronted on Feb. 16 by campus safety officers while attempting to put a banner over the Carleton University sign on Bronson Avenue. One of the students involved with the campaign, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the three students were approached by two campus safety special constables while hanging the sign. “They basically came and they asked for our info, they said they needed to identify the people doing it, they took down our names, numbers, addresses and student numbers,” the student said. Students respond to Sexual Violence Policy

A second open letter has been released to push for reforms to the university’s recently implemented sexual violence policy (SVP). Sally Johnson, one of the leaders of the Not Our Policy campaign, said the open letter was written to address existing issues with the policy that the Board of Governors (BoG) approved on Dec. 1. “There were some changes that were made and we were really happy about that,” Johnson said. “But I think definitely—through talking to other groups—[the administration] missed a lot of things and they missed some things even from our [initial] recommendations.” A letter was previously written by the Carleton Human Rights Society in November, during the feedback period before the SVP was voted on by the […]
