Resources lacking for student mental health services

The Ontario University and College Health Association (OUCHA) published their results from a survey of students this past spring, which found 65 per cent of Ontario students felt overwhelming anxiety in the previous year. The survey, titled the National College Health Assessment (NCHA), was sent to students at 41 schools across Canada. CBC reported that Meg Houghton, president of OUCHA, said the amount of students seeking mental health services on campuses in Ontario has become a “major crisis.” “Many of us who oversee counselling services describe our day as using a finger to stop a flood and the demand for our services far outstrips our capacity to support students,” she told CBC. Survey finds nearly 70 per cent of students feel lonely

Have you ever felt lonely, even though you’re surrounded by thousands of university students on a weekly basis? According to a new mental health report, you’re not the only one. A study released by the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services found that almost 70 per cent of Canadian post-secondary students surveyed felt strong feelings of loneliness throughout the school year. The recently completed National College Health Assessment survey (NCHS) was issued to students at 41 Canadian institutions. Carleton students smoke less marijuana than perceived, numbers show

Carleton students think 30 per cent of students smoke marijuana frequently, when in fact it is only four per cent, according to the eToke survey and the 2012 National College Health Assessment. Marijuana is the most commonly consumed illegal drug in Canada, with the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH) reporting 8.3 per cent of people aged 18-29 in Ontario use marijuana weekly or daily. According to the CAMH, 17 per cent of post-secondary students in Canada use marijuana monthly, and six per cent use it daily. Undergraduate students to vote on levy increases

Carleton has announced three questions undergraduate students will vote on concerning increases in student fees in an upcoming referendum April 2-3. The first question asks students if they are in favour of paying a fee of $22.50 per term to increase wireless performance and extend coverage to the entire campus. The fee would also permit students to access software available in public student labs from their own computer. The second asks if students support an increase of the Carleton University Health Service Fee by $5.00 a term.
