Commentary: CMTS’s Heathers is a showstopper

Based on the 1989 film by the same name, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, the Carleton Musical Theatre Society (CMTS)’s production of Heathers is Mean Girls meets murder meets musical. Directed by Victoria Rutkowski, and music directed by Galen Cuisson, the CMTS’s second ever production was an absolute treat. Veronica Sawyer (Michelle Gendron) is a quiet, dorky student at Westerberg High in Sherwood, Ohio. She dreams of being friends with the popular clique, three girls who share one name: The Heathers. Q+A: Heathers director Victoria Rutkowski

The Carleton Musical Theatre Society (CMTS) is putting on a production of Heathers, an off-Broadway musical based off the film of the same name. With the premiere fast-approaching on March 8, The Charlatan talked to director Victoria Rutkowski about the show. The Charlatan (TC): Tell me about your musical theatre experience before this show. Carleton Musical Theatre Society tackles Heathers

After last year’s successful run of Cabaret, the Carleton Musical Theatre Society (CMTS) is back again for its second year on campus. Having tackled an old Broadway standard, they will be changing the pace this year with one of 2014’s more popular Off-Broadway shows, Heathers: The Musical, an adaptation of the 1988 dark comedy Heathers. Jesse Levy, CMTS’s co-president, said she hoped the ‘80s nostalgia would boost attendance for this year’s production. She added that acquiring the rights to Heathers was expensive, but not difficult. “We just had to answer a bunch of questions about who we are and what we do.
