Editorial: Capital Hoops needs to move to a better venue

This year the annual Capital Hoops Classic saw a drop in attendance of 1,500 people. With an official attendance of 8,579, this is the lowest attendance the game has had since 2014. If Carleton and the University of Ottawa (U of O) hope to keep Capital Hoops relevant, they need to reconsider the Canadian Tire Centre as the host of the event. The Canadian Tire Centre is over a 30 minute drive (with no traffic) from Carleton’s campus, and even farther from the U of O, meaning that for students, the travel time alone to Capital Hoops could exceed two hours. Add on the fact that the night features two games, a student would have to spend nearly six hours […]

Editorial: The Colonel By Classic deserves more attention

Despite having been in the top 10 nationwide for U Sports hockey earlier this season, the Ravens men’s hockey gets little love from its own campus. The Colonel By Classic, the annual rivalry game between Carleton and University of Ottawa (U of O), was held in the TD Place arena, a rink with 10,000 seats. But, only 2,268 people attended the game. The Colonel By Classic should be planned in such a way that it generates the same amount of excitement as the Panda Game and Capital Hoops. It was a disservice to the team and to students to schedule the game around midterm season, when students are too busy with their studies to even consider attending the game. Rather, […]

Men’s hockey extends win streak to six

The Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team extended their winning streak to six games as they beat the University of Ottawa (U of O) Gee-Gees 4-2 on Nov. 10, and then defeated the Queens Gaels 4-1 the following day. The Ravens offence got off to an early start against the U of O, as Ravens forward Ryan Van Stralen fired the puck into the back of the net past Gee-Gee’s goalie Graham Hunt just two minutes into the game. Only seconds later, Ravens forward Fabian Walsh took a pass from teammate Brett Gustavsen and wired the puck past Hunt to take a 2-0 lead. Before the first period could end, Ravens forward Dalen Hedges put a backhand shot through Hunt’s legs, […]

Ravens fall to Gee-Gees in Colonel By Classic

The Carleton Ravens and the University of Ottawa (U of O) Gee-Gees hit the ice at TD Arena for the second annual Colonel By Classic on Nov. 17. The Ravens fell to the Gee-Gees 4-3, as the Gee-Gees looked to get their first win against Carleton this year and take home the Colonel By Classic banner. The first period of the game was defined by a hard-hitting, defensive style of play, with the Gee-Gees outshooting the Ravens 11-8. Ravens goaltender Francois Brassard stood strong, kicking out all the shots pointed towards him, with many coming from high danger spots. Carleton would have the first opportunity on the power play in the first period, which U of O goalie Graham Hunt […]

Ravens vs. Gee-Gees: Colonel By Classic preview

Since the return of the University of Ottawa (U of O) Gee-Gees men’s hockey program in 2016, the two schools have made a bigger effort to promote and make an event of their rivalry game. The second annual Colonel By Classic will take place on Nov. 17 at the TD Arena. The Ravens are the current holders of the Colonel By Classic banner after a 6-2 win last year. Despite the early confidence that the win at the Colonel By Classic instilled, the Ravens team went on to have a lackluster year. Carleton struggled all season with an underperforming power play and poor defensive zone play, leading to a record of 16-9-3. The team tied with the Université du Québec […]
