Bluesfest Day 10: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers rock the festival’s final night

On the final night of Bluesfest, many great artists took to the stage, but only one name stood out high above them all: Tom Petty. After solid performances by classic rocker Peter Wolf and Canadian country star Tim Hicks, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers brought their 40th anniversary tour to the City Stage in front of a massive crowd that extended nearly three-quarters of the way down the main lawn on Lebreton Flats. To say that Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have had a great career would be an understatement. Originally from Gainesville, Fla., the band has sold tens of millions of albums, headlined the Super Bowl halftime show in 2008, and have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall […]

Bluesfest Day Nine: Dead Obies, Busty and the Bass, and Muse

After a rather frustrating night of pouring rain, lightning delays, and performance cancellations, Mother Nature seemed to be in a good mood as the second last night of Bluesfest was welcomed with warm and sunny weather. Behind the Canadian War Museum, the Blacksheep Stage once again welcomed numerous exciting and unique performers. Early in the evening, Dead Obies took to the stage. The six-man group from Montreal’s South Shore brought their experimental “Franglais” hip-hop style, which is common among Quebec rappers, to the stage. While their crowd was smaller than some of the other rappers who previously performed at Bluesfest, they seemed to be engaged and having a good time, just like the guys on stage. Continuing a series of […]

Bluesfest Day Six: Fevers, The Shins, and LCD Soundsystem

On a cold Wednesday evening, Bluesfest continued for a sixth night with an electric lineup. At the beginning of the evening, a group of keen local music supporters welcomed Fevers to the Claridge Homes Stage. Led by the melodic vocals of Sarah Bradley, the electro-indie-rock band from Ottawa is coming hot off the recent release of their new album, Apologia. For their third concert at Bluesfest, Fevers performed a fair mix of dark, pleasant-sounding, and upbeat songs, and created a pleasing and ambient tone throughout the crowd. Immediately after on the City Stage was a somewhat stylistically similar performance by Phantogram. The duo from Saragota Springs, N.Y. performed numerous loud and upbeat songs, fully delivering their heavy and intense sound. The filtered […]

Bluesfest Day Five: Fetty Wap, Jake Owen, RL Grime, and July Talk

After a one-day break, Bluesfest was back with its most diverse single-day lineup yet on July 11. Kicking things off on the Bluesville Stage was Harea Band. The up-and-coming band from Ottawa brought their unique fusion style to the stage, which they describe as “sexy soul and disco infused pop,” using instruments such as synthesizers, electric drums, and keytars. Lead singer Matt Harea made the show even more exciting with his strong, soulful vocals and by leading the rest of the band in choreographed funk dance moves. Opening the City Stage for the evening was a highly-anticipated performance by Fetty Wap and Monty. From the moment the concert began, the hip-hop superstars kept the mostly teenage crowd engaged, as they […]

Bluesfest Day Four: JOHNNYSWIM, High Valley, and P!nk

Bluesfest continues rain or shine, and under Sunday’s torrential downpour, the fourth night of the festival came out stronger than the previous nights. Before the rain began to fall, a small group of fans gathered in front of the Claridge Homes stage to take in a sentimental performance by JOHNNYSWIM. The duo, who first met in Nashville and started writing songs together in 2005, have been married since 2009. The husband-wife dynamic of singer Amanda Sudano Ramirez and singer-guitarist Abner Ramirez created a unique, stripped-down, and soulful atmosphere. The couple did not need the support of any backup musicians, as they were able to deliver an energetic and exciting performance on their own. Almost immediately after JOHNNYSWIM’s set, the rain […]
