Editorial: Capital Hoops needs to move to a better venue

This year the annual Capital Hoops Classic saw a drop in attendance of 1,500 people. With an official attendance of 8,579, this is the lowest attendance the game has had since 2014. If Carleton and the University of Ottawa (U of O) hope to keep Capital Hoops relevant, they need to reconsider the Canadian Tire Centre as the host of the event. The Canadian Tire Centre is over a 30 minute drive (with no traffic) from Carleton’s campus, and even farther from the U of O, meaning that for students, the travel time alone to Capital Hoops could exceed two hours. Editorial: Capital Hoops games should alternate times

Capital Hoops is the annual matchup between the Carleton University Ravens and the University of Ottawa (U of O) Gee-Gees men’s and women’s basketball teams. The games take place at the Canadian Tire Centre, with the women’s team playing at 6 p.m. this year, followed by the men’s team, who start at 8 p.m. Every year, for the past three years, the Capital Hoops matchup game has drawn over 10,000 students. However, as anyone who has watched both the men’s and women’s teams games will tell you, the turnout for women’s games is noticeably lower than the men’s game.
