Letter: SFUO’s support of BDS is discriminatory and harmful

Earlier this month, Jewish and pro-Israel students in Ottawa were shocked to learn of a motion by the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO) to endorse the movement to “boycott, divest from and sanction Israel (BDS).” While BDS portrays itself as a non-violent form of protest, its founders reveal its main goal: to eliminate Israel as a Jewish state. This is documented by BDS co-founder Omar Barghouti on numerous occasions, including an interview with The Electronic Intifada, when he said his advocation of “the return for (Palestinian) refugees would end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.” By bringing the pro-BDS motion forward, the SFUO sent a highly charged and negative message to Jewish and pro-Israel students. Editorial: Divisive issues distract in student government

A student at McGill University is alleging that he was removed from the university’s student government Board of Directors based on his religious background and his opposition to the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. The BDS movement is a global campaign that calls for economic and political pressure on Israel. The student, Noah Lew, alleged that he had been singled out in protest materials written by a student organization in support of the BDS movement against Israel, which claim his support for anti-BDS efforts made him unfit to serve on the board. SAIA hosts Israeli Apartheid Week

Carleton’s chapter of Students Against Israeli Apartheid (SAIA) is hosting Israeli Apartheid Week at Carleton from March 13 to 18.  Samiha Rayeda, the volunteer, outreach and programming co-ordinator at the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG), one of the sponsors of the week, said the goal of the week is mainly education and to “encourage students at Carleton and students all over the world to participate and support Palestinian solidarity.” She said she hopes the week will open discussions around the issue of Palestinian human rights and added the response to the week is “generally very positive.” According to the event’s Facebook page, Israeli Apartheid Week seeks to raise awareness about Israel’s policies towards Palestinian people and to build support […]
