Faith Greco

Editor-in-Chief

Faith Greco is a fourth-year journalism student pursuing a minor in history. After working for the Charlatan for the past few years, she is thrilled to be this year's editor-in-chief.

Faith is excited to lead the paper in a way that increases diversity with a team of talented, innovative and creative individuals. She hopes to help continue telling stories that would otherwise go untold.

She has a particular affinity and passion for investigative reporting and intends to pursue a career in investigative reporting following graduation.

When she isn't working, she splits her time between watching random history documentaries, listening to music and spending time outside in a forest.

Jenna Legge

Features Editor

Jenna Legge is the Charlatan's features editor and a fourth-year journalism and legal studies student minoring in political science.

Originally from Newfoundland, Jenna is thrilled to attend Carleton University in Ottawa.

She has previously contributed to the Charlatan as a volunteer reporter and has written for multiple other publications across Canada and the U.S.

When she’s not studying or writing, Jenna can be found at the pool or spending time with her dogs. She loves to travel and is more of a law nerd than she likes to admit.

Ryan Clark

Op/ed editor

Ryan Clark is the Charlatan’s op-ed editor, blogs and satire editor and is a second-year journalism and political science student.

Ryan grew up in Nanaimo, British Columbia, but has briefly lived in Prince George, British Columbia and Tampa, Florida.

Ryan loves writing about many topics and is always open to ideas for the op/ed and blog section. He has written the section previously and has also written in other sections. He also writes occasionally for a couple of baseball websites online, and hopes to start his own blog soon.

When not writing or editing, Ryan loves watching baseball, going bowling (two hands!) and listening to alternative rock. His favourite artists are The Dear Hunter and The Strokes. He is also probably the only Tampa Bay Rays fan in all of Ottawa.

Janson Duench

Sports Editor

Janson Duench is the Charlatan’s sports editor and a third-year journalism and humanities student. He covered Carleton’s men’s hockey for the Charlatan for the past two years and is excited to step into the role of sports editor.

From Cambridge, Ont., Janson loves watching the Pittsburgh Penguins, fixating on his fantasy hockey lineup, rollerblading along the Rideau Canal, sauna-ing, skiing and geeking out over Star Wars. Janson is always game for some sports talk, so feel free to reach out to him.

Elissa Mendes

News Editor

Elissa Mendes is one of the Charlatan’s news editors and a second-year journalism student with a concentration in health science. She can’t wait to give volunteers a chance to let their voices shine! Elissa is especially keen on bringing advocacy and research stories to the forefront of the news section.

When she isn’t working, Elissa loves to read, thrift and listen to silly folksy music.

After J-school, she plans to pursue a career in investigative journalism. She might be passionate about issues in STEM, but please don’t ask her to do any math.

Audrey Gunn

News Editor

Audrey Gunn is one of the Charlatan’s news editors and a third-year journalism and humanities student. Having volunteered for the news and arts sections of the Charlatan since first year, Audrey is passionate about student politics and social justice.

Audrey is from the small town of Grand Forks, British Columbia, and moved to Ottawa to pursue a career in journalism while exploring her interest in history, religion, and philosophy through humanities courses. In addition to writing for the Charlatan, Audrey has worked as a multimedia journalist for Black Press Media.

In her free time, Audrey likes reading, yoga and watching Star Trek. She loves fantasy novels, particularly Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a career in political or environmental journalism.

Kyra Vellinga

Arts Editor

Kyra (Ky) Vellinga is the Charlatan’s arts and culture editor and a third-year law and political science student.

Originally from the shores of southwestern Lake Erie, you can now frequently spot them sipping on a London Fog, sharing their analysis of the latest Survivor episode or listening to any indie album that sounds like trees could sing it.

Having served as a reporter for the Charlatan’s arts, news, national and features sections, Ky is thrilled to be stepping into this editorial role and seeing all your visions shine! They want the arts and culture section to be a warm, open space that connects arts reporting with broader socio-political conversations.

Multimedia and Web Editor

Matteo Golin is the Charlatan’s multimedia and web editor. He’s a computer systems engineering student with no affiliation with the Iron Times 🙂

When he’s not programming or working on amateur rocketry, you can find Matteo practicing his archery or learning a new language.

Emily McGrath

Managing Editor

Emily is the Charlatan’s managing editor and a fourth-year journalism and sociology student. From St. Catharines, Ontario, Emily has always danced to the beat of her own drum and feels so privileged to work with a team of talented and outspoken writers who are always authentically themselves.

When she’s not decorating the office or sending reminders in the work chat, you’ll probably find her awake past her bedtime playing Nintendo games, dancing to rare pressings of her favourite vinyl records or making endless movie lists on her Letterboxd account.

Owen Spillios-Hunter

Photo Editor

Owen Spillios-Hunter is the Charlatan's photo editor/staff photographer and a third-year journalism and geography student. Owen hails from Edmonton, Alberta but loves living in Ottawa.

Owen has been an avid photographer since purchasing his first camera in 2018, in order to document his experiences on an expedition to the arctic. Owen is particularly interested in stories surrounding the environment, justice, urban planning and geopolitics. He is thrilled to combine his love of news and photography for the Charlatan this year.

In his off time, you can find Owen playing video games, going on photo walks or hanging out with his many roommates.

Alisha Velji

Graphics Editor

Alisha Velji is the Graphics Editor and is in her second year of IMD (Interactive Multimedia & Design).

From Ajax, Ontario, Alisha originally chose to pursue a degree in computer science before transferring to IMD after her first year to follow through on her passion for visual art.

When not doodling, you can find her at a local café sipping an iced coffee while catching up on a good thriller book or geeking out over Taylor Swift.

Natasha Baldin

Copy Editor

Natasha Baldin is the Charlatan’s copy editor and a third-year journalism and linguistics student.

While growing up in suburban Ottawa, Natasha fell into journalism as a way to combine her love of writing, learning and storytelling. She has since worked with publications such as the Ottawa Citizen and Black Press Media in Victoria, B.C., developing a passion for local journalism and municipal politics.

When she doesn’t have her nose in her CP Stylebook, Natasha can be found playing or watching hockey, hanging out with her two cats or boring her friends with her latest linguistic fact.

She’s super thrilled to unleash her inner language nerd in this role and help every story thrive!

Jonah Grignon

Podcast Host

Jonah Grignon is a fourth-year journalism student pursuing a minor in religion. He grew up in the town of Lindsay, Ontario, before moving to Ottawa in 2020. He has recently combined his rural upbringing with his journalism education by writing for Farmtario. He has also written for The Hill Times, The Charlatan, Capital Current and Canada’s History.

Jonah is an avid listener of podcasts, and loves all things audio; you'd be hard-pressed to find him leaving the house without at least one portable microphone. Jonah believes the best way to experience the world’s stories is through its many interesting sounds.

Outside of school, you can find Jonah cooking (not just exploring) all types of cuisines, reading the nerdiest fantasy books imaginable, listening to maritime folk music, wandering aimlessly through one of Ottawa's many interesting neighborhoods or, of course, mixing audio tracks.

Isabelle Alexandre

Podcast Host

Isabelle Alexandre is one of the Podcast hosts for the Charlatan Live and a second-year Journalism and Political Science student with a concentration in International relations.

Isabelle is an International student from Paris, France.

Isabelle has a particular affinity for human interest stories and investigative journalism. She hopes that through her reporting she can shed light on important issues and give a voice to the voiceless.

In her free time, Isabelle loves to explore different types of cuisine from different cultures. Stepping into the role of podcast host, Isabelle hopes to explore audio more in depth, and is looking forward to tackling multimedia. In the future, Isabelle plans on pursuing a career in War Journalism.

Nehaa Bimal

Podcast Host

Nehaa Bimal is the Social Media Manager at the Charlatan and a fourth-year Journalism student at Carleton with a minor in Digital Humanities. With a passion for human profiles and digital storytelling, Nehaa has done social media coordination for organisations such as Photographers Without Borders, Street Voices Toronto, and the new Facts and Frictions special multimedia issue ‘Forced Change’ that features articles from Carleton J-School professors!

Nehaa has been writing for the Charlatan since her first year which she credits for her first bylines in university. With the Charlatan social media, Nehaa loves to highlight the behind-the-scenes work of our Charlatan staff such as our podcast hosts and graphic editor.

She hopes to continue freelance reporting and is pursuing a career in communications and marketing.
