Ont. college support staff on strike
Support staff at colleges all over Ontario walked off the job Sept. 1, according to the chair of the bargaining team representing their union, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU).
The support staff wants a 3 per cent salary increase every year, said Rod Bemister, a member of OPSEU, in a press release.
He said they also want the colleges to offer more full-time jobs.
U of O research discovers ‘promising’ cancer killer
The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa have discovered a virus that attacks and shrinks cancer tumours, while leaving healthy tissues alone, according to the Ottawa Citizen.
The virus, called JX-594, was developed by biotherapeutics company Jennerex Inc.
Researchers have genetically engineered the virus to enhance its natural anti-cancer properties.
Ryerson shakes their way to Guiness record
Ryerson University has unofficially set a new world record for having the most people play maracas at once.
Students were handed maracas as they entered the Ryerson compound Sept. 1, gathering around as they waited for the music to start, according to a report from CTV Toronto.
The record was broken by 567 people who shook their maracas for two minutes straight to the song “La Bamba,” according to a Ryerson press release.
Quebec gets school of Canadian Irish Studies
Concordia University is bringing a little of Emerald Isle to Montreal by opening the School of Canadian Irish Studies, according to Maclean’s magazine.
Starting this fall, Concordia is offering the option to major in Irish Canadian studies.
The degree will focus on the unique experience of the Irish people in North America, and the interplay between the Irish, Quebecois, and other nationalities that immigrated to Canada, according to Maclean’s.
Social security numbers leaked at Yale
Social security numbers of 43,000 Yale students, staff and alumni were available through Google’s search engine for 10 months, according to a letter from Len Peters, Yale’s information technology services director.
The file containing the social security numbers had been available to the public since September 2010 when Google modified its search engine and what information was publicly available, according to CNBC.
