Ottawa Centre candidates debate at Carleton

Four candidates running in the Ottawa Centre riding gathered for an all-candidates debate in Carleton’s Unicentre Sept. 27 ahead of the Oct. 6 provincial election.

Yasir Naqvi of the Ontario Liberal Party, Anil Naidoo of the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP), Kevin O’Donnell of the Green Party of Ontario, and Stuart Ryan of the Communist Party of Canada (Ontario) were all present at the panel. The candidate for Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives, Rob Dekker, was not.

The level of commitment towards tuition fee reduction in the upcoming provincial election is disappointing, according to Sandy Hudson, chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario (CFS-O).
 

Windsor music therapy program suspended

The University of Windsor’s music therapy program will not be accepting admissions for the 2012-13 school year due to a lack of funding, according to the Windsor Star.

The program has been unable to keep up with the vast costs of securing two tenure-track professors and the decision was made to help eliminate the faculty’s $1.6 million dollar deficit, according to the Star.

High lead levels found at UNB

An excess of lead was found in 81 sinks and water fountains on the University of New Brunswick (UNB) campus, according to the CBC.

Barbara Nicholson, associate vice-president for capital planning and property development at UNB, told the Daily Gleaner that measures have been taken to either shut down affected units or start replacing them with special filtered units.

Ontario election candidate profile: Jason MacDonald

Jason MacDonald, the Ontario Progessive Conservative Party candidate for Ottawa South, is perhaps best-known by Carleton students as being the director of communications at Carleton University.

MacDonald studied arts at Bishop’s University in Quebec, according to a Carleton press release. After graduating, he received his master’s of arts from Wilfrid Laurier University, according to the release.
