Naqvi glides to easy victory in Ottawa Centre

Ottawa Centre Liberal incumbent Yasir Naqvi overcame New Democratic Party (NDP) challenger Anil Naidoo by more than 9,000 votes Oct. 6 to become part of the Ontario Liberal Party’s third successive government.

SFU student shot in parking lot

A 19-year-old British Columbia student was shot Sept. 28 in a university parking lot, according to CTV.

Maple Batalia, a nursing student at Simon Fraser University (SFU)’s Surrey campus, died in hospital shortly after.

Batalia’s ex-boyfriend, Gurjinder (Gary) Dhaliwal, turned himself in for two seperate assaults but has not been directly charged for Batalia’s murder, according to the Vancouver Sun.

Batalia was a model and an actress who had earned a small role in the movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Rallying to honour aboriginal women

Aboriginal families received support from politicians and students alike at the sixth annual vigil for missing and murdered aboriginal women held on Parliament Hill Oct. 4.

The vigil was a call to action for the nearly 600 aboriginal women who have gone missing or murdered in Canada— a rate alarmingly higher than the national average of missing persons.
   
The protesters called for a national inquiry and a task force to look into the issue.

McGill accused of using illegal workers

McGill University has been accused of using illegal replacement workers to fill in for striking support staff, according to the Quebec Ministry of Labour.

The accusations were made Sept. 23 when a Quebec Labour Department inspector filed a public report detailing that 15 of 110 workers were not eligible replacements for the more than 1,600 support staff on strike.

These illegal workers were found not to be managers or employees who are certified for the positions, the report stated.

Red Bull ban scrapped at UNH

After announcing that energy drinks would be banned on campus, the University of New Hampshire (UNH) will not put the ban into effect after all, according to the Associated Press.
