McGill students cleared of charges after allegedly breaking code of conduct

Two members of McGill University’s students’ association have been cleared of all charges after allegedly violating the university’s code of conduct during a demonstration supporting striking support staff workers.

The students, Joël Pedneault, vice-president (external) of the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU), and councillor Micha Stettin are members of McGill’s Mob Squad.

The University of Ottawa is financially supporting a civil lawsuit filed against Denis Rancourt, a former physics professor at the university.

Rancourt, who was fired by in 2009, was sued by professor Joanne St. Lewis for defamation after he referred to her a “house negro” while commenting on her professional relationship with university president Allan Rock.

Students call for national post-secondary act at CFS lobby week

The annual Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) lobby week was held in Queen’s Park Oct. 24-28, as a number of students from Ontario gathered to call for a national post-secondary act, according to Chantle Beeso, vice-president (student issues) of the Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA).

This act would ensure a high-quality and accessible education system for students across the country, Beeso said.
