University, one course at a time
Courses at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. could be condensed to three weeks if a new sequential course program is approved.
Queen’s marching band suspended
The marching band at Queen’s University’s has been suspended for the rest of the fall term after circulating material containing offensive language demeaning to women, according to the university.
Ann Tierney, vice-provost and dean of student affairs at Queen’s, said the materials were “unacceptable.”
McGill students express concerns with police conduct
Students at McGill University gathered Nov. 14 for a rally to speak out against the behaviour of police, university administration and campus security guards during the Nov. 10 demonstration against a rise in tuition fees.
A student-led movement took place Nov. 10 at post-secondary schools across Quebec, opposing the tuition hike that will kick in next year. Tuition fees in Quebec will increase by $325 every year until 2016, according to the 2011-12 provincial budget. Currently, undergraduate students in Quebec pay about $2,168 per year in tuition fees.
No plans to evict occupiers, police say
While the Occupy movement seems to be facing resistance throughout North America, the future of Occupy Ottawa is still up in the air.
There have been no injuries so far and the protests in Ottawa have been “low key,” according to police.
“Everything has been status quo so far,” and the protests are monitored daily, said Const. Henri Lanctôt, an Ottawa police media representative.
Charges laid in Penn State sex scandal
A sex abuse scandal at Pennsylvania State University has resulted in charges being laid against the football team’s former defensive co-ordinator Jerry Sandusky and the dismissal of head coach Joe Paterno, according to a university press release.
Sandusky was arrested Nov. 5 and charged with 40 counts of sexually abusing children over a period of 15 years.
Mike McQueary, the team’s assistant coach, said he witnessed Sandusky abusing a young boy in the showers in 2002, according to The Patriot News.
